Day 2

Namaste,
We have made it through our 2nd day here in Kolkata. We began teaching the children of St Georges and St Marys Rice Centre which was an eye opening and enjoyable experience for all. With plenty of fried eggs warming up our stomachs we were full of energy leaving for our first teaching experience.

The 12 of us were split into two groups, Therese, Saskia, Chiedza, Kaci and Allie went to the Mary Rice Centre here in St Marys and Ms Foody, Ms Quirke, Emma, Zoe, Anna, Ally, Rachel, Sarah, Jessica and Leonie worked with the children of St Georges school. The Mary Rice centre is a school for children with intellectual disabilities and teaching there was an unforgettable experience. We found it quite challenging as many of the children struggled with communication so there was a definite barrier in front of the four of us. That didn't stop us jumping right in, supplying plenty of colours and colouring sheets, we tried our very best to keep the children entertained for th e day.

The girls who went to St Georges School were instantly warmed by the children's positivity and beaming smiles. We will never forget the constant beams of happiness from the children despite their very difficult situations outside of school. We assisted the teachers with teaching English and had lots of fun playing chasing, basketball and dancing with all of the students in the yard during the breaks and after school. We will soon be appearing in Bollywood.

We are all coming to grips with the whole bucket shower situation and are all expecting abs by the end of the trip from constantly carrying buckets up and down the hall. We have lit our candle this evening and are thinking of everybody at home.
Signing off,
XOXO Killiney Girls

Delighted to learn that you have arrived safely. As I type it is snowing on HCK.....the 2nd years are out trying to make snow balls!! Continue to embrace all the challenges this immersion programme is offering you. Don't be afraid - you have been well prepared! Your candle is burning brightly on my desk and I think of you often. Looking after yourselves and one another. Hugs, C.O'B
